Redwood Curtain Theatre Gallery Opens for 2015 with Augustus Clark
The bright, bold colors and characteristic fish and birds make the art of Augustus Clark nearly instantly?recognizable in Humboldt County. Redwood Curtain Theatre is pleased to showcase Clark’s work in their first?lobby gallery art show of 2015.
Clark received his BA in studio arts from UC Santa Cruz where he discovered that he absolutely loved to paint.?After college he enrolled in the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Connecticut to refine techniques in traditional?painting with oils, but he soon realized the medium and the style was not for him – “I moved back to Humboldt?because I just wanted to paint.” And since then he’s immersed himself in painting. Acrylics called to Clark from?his college days when he discovered all kinds of amazing colors he never knew existed. Iridescent paint colors are?often present in his work, and he’s discovered the thrill of including glitter in a piece. “I guess I’m trying to get past?kitsch by REALLY going through it right now.” Clark comments, “but I try and make it fun.”
Clark is also working to use these sparkly and different color tones as an extension of the color wheel. The?subject matter of birds and fishes may seem simple on the outside, but they give him an interesting opportunity?to think about bringing more complexity to the work. He explains “In music theory there are 12 chromatic tones,?and some musical composers play with making those tones have equal weight. I think about doing a similar thing?with the color wheel – looking for new ways to randomize color choices in my paintings.”
The show at Redwood Curtain theatre includes a number of newer pieces, and many larger scale pieces.?Redwood Curtain invites the public to the opening night reception for Augustus Clark on February 6th, and?occurring in conjunction with Eureka’s February Arts Alive! festivities.
The Redwood Curtain theatre and gallery are located at 220 1st Street, Eureka. Clark’s work will be on display?in the gallery through the upcoming theatrical production of The Velocity of Autumn, which runs February 26-March 21.
